Celebrating 50 Years of Dance Theatre of Harlem | Promotional Video
I JUST gave Virginia Johnson and Anna Glass big hugs – Dance Theatre of Harlem arrived at Jacob’s Pillow!!!
Having Dance Theatre of Harlem at Jacob’s Pillow just feels right.
They are celebrating 50 years. What an amazing accomplishment!
We created this video many months ago, but I want to share it with you. This company has a warm place in my heart. I am always moved by their dancing.
Tonight I am watching their show in the Ted Shawn Theatre. They’re performing one of my favorite works by Christopher Wheeldon, This Bitter Earth.
It is pretty much full circle: I filmed the premiere of This Bitter Earth at Vail Dance Festival in 2012. Oh, how I love the small, but mighty, dance world!!

Thank you for keeping in touch. I am always excited to see your work. In case you don’t know it next year is ‘Danco’s 50th. Also my schools 60th. I started out having the prospect of having a black ballet company but when Arthur started DTH I knew the powers that be wouldn’t let there be two, and as we were just coming out of segregation, so I switched to a mixed rep but concentrated on ballet training. So now you knnow. (Smiles).
Thanks so much for writing, Joan. Happy almost 50th anniversary!!! And wow! 60 years of the school?! Amazing!
