Last week of Jacob’s Pillow 2016

by | Sep 9, 2016 | Performance Video, Promotional Video

I’m so grateful for my summers at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. I love what I do and feel so grateful to have been nurtured at Jacob’s Pillow these past 15 years. I have become an artist because of this place and created a life in the dance world – and so has my husband Christopher. My children, Gracie and Jack, are very fortunate to have Jacob’s Pillow in their backyard and to grow up around all of these artists who are so kind and generous to them – including the Pillow staff that takes them under their wing.

This behind-the scenes video sums up so much: Christopher at work making gorgeous dance photos, behind-the-scenes gorgeous video by Ben Rich who interned with me years ago at the Pillow and who works with me both here and in New York, my friend and co-director Margaret Mullin of my next documentary film No Dominion (in the video with Madison Taylor)… I am so grateful!

I hope Nel Shelby Productions can make more and more of these special peeks into what happens in an artists’ process. Behind-the-scenes, backstage passes into the lives of dancers and companies we love and admire. Christopher and Ben and I know the hard work and creativity and love that pours into your projects – let’s show that heart and soul to more and more people!! Let’s get the whole world excited about dance!

One of my favorite moments though – all of those patterns you were mentioning – we learn it all separately, and then all of a sudden there’s this tornado happening around you when you put it all together for the first time.

Being African and coming from my background of traditional African dance… I’m trying to create the link between my home town … and the influence we have around the world. Not losing this tradition but keeping it to make it more valuable.
