Celebrating Dance Theatre of Harlem's Arthur Mitchell; A Dance Film by Nel Shelby Productions

Back in 2019, we were asked to film a tour of Arthur Mitchell’s Harlem to commemorate one year since he had passed.

At the height of the civil rights movement, Mitchell founded a classical ballet school for the children of Harlem, the poor and predominantly Black New York neighborhood where he was raised.

Arthur Mitchell’s Harlem takes you on a tour through the important stops that represent Mr. Mitchell and Dance Theatre of Harlem.

I have been so inspired by this film, not only the content but what we created from this tour.

When we originally filmed this in 2019, DTH wanted to capture moments from the tour but did not have a plan for what would become of the footage.

Fast forward to now, with the magic of collaboration, editing, creative thinking, and storytelling… magic happened.

Working with Virginia Johnson, Anna Glass, and the DTH team was so fluid. We love and adore these people!!!

We created this film quickly and with grace. A huge shout out to my team:

Ashli Bickford: Assistant Producer and Editor,
Nate Reininga: Videographer and Graphic Designer,
and Cherylynn Tsushima: Project Manager.

I acknowledge that it is not an easy time right now. We are thriving on collaboration and connection. I feel so grateful to continue to produce creative work like this with my clients and my team.

Arthur Mitchell’s Harlem premieres on Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Youtube channel on February 11th at 6:30pm ET. The film is 20 minutes, and I promise you will learn so much.

I hope you’ll tune in!!
