Live-streaming Dance Education Laboratory’s Movement Sentence Choir
Have you ever had one of those moments where you just want to pinch yourself?
A few weeks ago we worked on a project that made me feel that way.
Jody Gottfried Arnhold and Ann Biddle are two of my favorite people, and they both happen to lead Dance Education Laboratory’s Movement Sentence Choir.
We have filmed DEL’s Movement Sentence Choir before, but this year was extra special. My daughter, Gracie, danced in it with her friends!!! My son, Jack, was there too – he came to watch his big sister do her thing, and follow me around as I filmed.
There’s something so exciting about live-streaming and being in-the-moment.
We easily could have filmed this and then put it online later, but it was more exciting to see all of the participants amping up the event by proudly telling their friends and families that they’ll be able to tune in live. The immediacy about a livestream is just so special – there was a buzz in the air, and the energy in the room was unreal.
The fact that over 1,000 people were able to tune into this special event and discover DEL’s incredible community, the creativity of the artists and the collaboration between people of all ages is really meaningful to me and my team. I hope whoever watches is just as inspired as we were!!
I am so incredibly proud of my team.
They really are the best humans on the planet! It’s such a relief to know that I can direct everyone to do something different with full confidence that it will be done with professionalism, patience and creativity. Having my husband Christopher there making portraits always makes a shoot 100x more fun!!
Live-streaming an event this important is a HUGE honor.
You already know that I am a passionate advocate for dance education, and NSP regularly works with Dance Education Laboratory. My favorite part about this year’s Movement Sentence Choir was that there were over 60 people who we filmed dancing for over 5 hours!!! Creating, moving, collaborating, DANCING.
If everyone could do this, can you imagine our world? Democracy in action. This livestream is just a little taste. #DanceForEveryChild, and DANCE FOR EVERY HUMAN!!!

“Before January, I had never filmed a DEL Movement Sentence Choir before. I had heard a lot about the special event and was looking forward to seeing it for myself. Plus, 6 NSP team members + Gracie and Jack were going to be there. A whole crew!
During the workshop, I filmed the 3+ hour long workshop while Nel walked around with her gimbal, capturing more dynamic shots. Cayla monitored the audio recording and Amber efficiently set up the livestream (she is a livestream wizard).
In the past, NSP has live-streamed the Movement Sentence Choir with just one camera. This year, we live-streamed with two cameras and were able to capture more of the individual group choreographies and expression through the close shots.
Cayla filmed the wide cam, I filmed the close cam, Amber ran the livestream, and Nel worked her magic directing live. It was definitely an exhausting yet rewarding day. Congrats, DEL!!”
